Lego MOC: Ewok Adventureland

Yub-nub!  What did the Ewoks do with all the junk the Empire left behind after the Battle of Endor? Build a galaxy-class theme park, of course! This collaborative build was 5 ft wide x 3.75 ft deep x approximately 5 ft tall and was on original concept by my friend Boone Langston. The first and only showing of the full creation was during Bricks Cascade 2020 (February 27 to March 1) in Portland, Oregon. Photo credit: Will Nickleson The Concept Boone and I are life-long Star Wars fans. Boone shared about the first time he saw Return of the Jedi : "The first time I saw ROTJ , it was on all the television sets at some department store in Tucson. I just sat there and watched while mom and dad looked at furniture or appliances or something. I’m pretty sure that was my first exposure to anything Star Wars and I was mesmerized! I didn’t want to leave that store when they were done shopping. I think that’s why ROTJ and the Ewoks have always been my favorites!...

Lego MOC: Benny's Workshop (Apocalypseburg Collab)

I was lucky enough to do another major collab with my buddies in the Troutdale Build League. We tackled our own version of Apocalypseburg inspired by The Lego Movie 2 .  There were more than 5 builders involved and we created buildings for Benny, Batman, Metalbeard, Lucy and Emmett. You can see a video of our display at the 2019 Bricks Cascade in Portland: Here's an image of the full layout: My assigned section was Benny's Workshop. I created a large junkyard-style structure where Benny could tinker and repair things for the Apocalypseburg residents.  Suspended above the center of his workshop is Benny's beloved Spaceship, Spaceship, Spaceship!!! but it is now partially disassembled with some discoloring. Behind his workshop I built a moving windmill that doubles as a hidden launch pad for a new spaceship he's secretly working on. The counterbalance for Benny's spaceship is a Duplo monster. A view into the spaceship cockpit. A bit...

Lego MOC: Dino Roller Coaster

Watch Video on Facebook This abandoned theme park ride has been powered up and is back in action -- thanks to a few clever raptors! This is a relatively quick build started about 1 month prior to Bricks Cascade 2019, and completed about a week prior to the show. I didn't purchase the Creator coaster set but instead referenced the instructions to create the main incline and motorized portion. Once mocked up (without the landscaping), the coaster worked great. But as the build progressed, and I added more landscaping, the coaster started slowing, then stopped at places it never stopped before. I tried compressed air, baby wipes on the tracks, different configurations of coaster cars/weight/loads, endlessly tweaked heights of the various tracks. Ultimately I decided to show it at Cascade anyway. We made the most of it despite the build needing constant attention. Many thanks to Mike, Drew and Elhannen for babysitting my build while I was away. :) ...

Lego MOC: Ninjago City - So Many Sharks, So Little Time

I was very lucky to participate in a massive collaborative display at BrickCon 2018 (Seattle), put together by the Brothers Brick. Here's a look at that amazing Ninjago City display that included dozens of builders! My building was a humble section with a modest lower section, utilitarian upper area, and a motorized shark tank. Many thanks go to out to my friend Brett who got me into the collab build, helped motivate me during creative blocks, and hauled the entire build to Seattle for me when I had to miss BrickCon at the last second. I was more than a little surprised to win "Best Upper Level" -- a great honor amid a very high caliber of builders!

Lego MOC: Brick Rogers Astro Base Station (Collaboration)

My first collaborative build was for BRICK ROGERS, first shown at Bricks Cascade 2018. Together with the very talented Troutdale Build League, we created a space outpost themed after Lego's retro spaceman CMF. My contributions included a Power Generator Building, Rover and Green House.

Lego MOC: Escape Pod for (10179) UCS Millennium Falcon

No matter what you thought of the standalone Solo  Star Wars movie, it was hard to miss the radical changes made to the Falcon. The iconic ship was nearly showroom fresh in white and blue, with a streamlined sensor dish and large escape pod covering the mandibles. The interior is bright and reflected Lando's interests: entertaining in style and showing off his prodigiously large space cape collection. I challenged myself to build an escape pod for the front of my classic 10179 UCS Millenium Falcon. Because I like rules, I saddled myself with a few guidelines: 1) The exterior should maintain the color scheme and visual language of the UCS Falcon, 2) The escape pod should snugly attach to the UCS Falcon, 3) Make no changes to the UCS Falcon, 4) The escape pod should be able to open up to reveal an interior, 5) Try to use only Lego elements that were available circa 2007. To make sense of why this version of the Falcon would exist in the Star Wars world, I imagin...
